Postal Robbery


During the Civil War, the IRA used to rob post offices and some time the mail was marked as having been in a robbery. After An Post took over as the Irish postal administration they used a cachet that was numbered for all Dublin robberies. However, with the number rising into the teens after a few year the number was dispensed with and the cachet as shown below was applied.

Cover involved in a mail robbery was marked with the ‘DELAYED MAIL’ handstamp and then enclosed
in a ‘Dublin Postal District’ applied heat sealed plastic sleeve as an ‘Ambulance Cover’
