Forerunners


While forerunners refers a groupstamp-like labelspolitical interest that were printed around the timethe establishmentthe Irish Free State in 1922, the name suggest these are predecessorsthe first postage stamps but this is not the case. The Irish forerunners are really political labels as opposed to postally valid adhesives. They were not meant as prepaymentpostage but fit into the turbulent and complex political historythe period, though much information about them is still unknown.



1907-1916 Sinn Fein Celtic Cross label

The usethese labels on the frontenvelopes
was forbidden by Post Office regulationsJuly, 1908.


1922 Irish White Cross labels

These labels were issued to fund victimsBlack and Tan atrocities.


1907-1916 Sinn Fein Hibernia label with narrow crown

Used on registered first day coverthe 1941 Easter Rising provisional 2d and 3d overprints.

The Northern California Chapter of the Éire Philatelic Association will hold a meeting in conjunction with WESTPEX 2018 on Saturday, April 28, 2018 in Room 8024.

The meeting will include a talk by noted philatelist Barry Cousins, who will speak on his current project; a reference guide for collectors of Irish stamps from 1992 through 2001.
